Yellow Split Pea Dal With Aubergine

  • 1/2 onion

  • 3 cloves of garlic

  • 1-2 dry chilies

  • 2 medium/large tomatoes

  • 5 curry leaves

  • 10 g ginger

  • 2 aubergines

  • 1 chayote or 1/2 calabash

  • 4 tbsp yellow split pea powder

  • 1 tbsp madras masala

  • 2 tbsp saffron


  1. Chop the aubergines, chayote/calabash and tomatoes, and finely cut the onion, garlic, chillies and ginger.

  2. Fry the onion, garlic, ginger and curry leaves to light brown colour.

  3. Next add the tomato, aubergine, chayote/calabash, chili, salt, masala, saffron and ground yellow split pea. Add water to just cover the ingredients in the pot.

  4. Steam under a lid at medium to high heat.
